Chef Hats—Then and Now
Legend has it that the chef hat originated in the court of King Henry VIII. His royal chef had started losing hair, and one lost hair landed in the King’s soup. So the balding cook was beheaded, and the king ordered any succeeding chefs to wear hats.
Another theory is that the toque or European chef hat had its roots in 7th century A.D. when chefs were being persecuted. They fled to the local church for refuge and disguised themselves like the clergy (hat and all) to remain anonymous until the trouble had passed.
Thankfully, chef hats are no longer worn to avoid beheading or persecution, but they are the crowning piece of the uniform for culinary artists.
